Why collect Angelo Marchetti

A 20th-century Milanese painter and sculptor who worked for decades far from the market, building an authentic and personal body of work. A figure who deserves to be rediscovered, and whom time has made all the more compelling.

The Saint — Angelo Marchetti, oil on canvas, cat. 243

Three languages — painting, sculpture, engraving — for a single, coherent inner search.

Angelo Marchetti painted, sculpted and engraved for almost fifty years, quietly building a vast and personal body of work in which the human figure, the inner landscape and formal research intertwine in an immediately recognisable language. Born in Milan in 1930, he worked far from the mechanisms of official exhibition — a choice that protected the authenticity of his voice but kept his work out of the visibility it deserved.

What also sets Marchetti apart from his contemporaries is the private dimension of his research: a body of writings — poems, letters, aphorisms, notes — that accompanies the visual work and reveals an artist who thought in images and in words alike. To collect a work by Marchetti is to gain access to this double depth: visual work of authentic quality and a complex human figure whose journey is worth knowing.

The Associazione d'Artisti Angelo Marchetti, chaired by the painter's son, oversees the cataloguing and promotion of the corpus: authentication of works, archival research, selection and dissemination. The works shown on this page come from this ongoing curatorial effort, which ensures documented provenance and direct recognition on the original.

“A wondrous journey through the infinite worlds of the spirit.”

Ettore Ceruti — 1976

“A body of work that does not offer itself at once, but asks for a gaze willing to dwell in unease.”

from the biography

“A Milanese painter active from the 1960s to 2000, Marchetti worked at the margins of the institutional exhibition system, building over time a coherent and secluded body of work that contemporary critics recognised as a singular voice in the figuration of the late twentieth century.”
