Work in Progress

Knowledge of Angelo Marchetti's work continues to grow through a cataloguing programme carried out by the association together with the artist's heirs. The undertaking began after the painter's death in 2000 and has developed over time without any formal starting date. A decisive moment came with access to the space in which Marchetti had worked: a large number of never-exhibited works emerged there, significantly broadening our understanding of his output and forming the first nucleus of the project.

Recognition and Authentication

Every work entering the catalogue is studied through direct examination of the original. Works recognised as authentic are marked with a catalogue number accompanied by a stamped letter «M» — the die for which is held by the artist's heirs — applied to the verso, in a position that does not interfere with the appreciation of the work. Where this is not possible, the work is numbered by hand and countersigned by the artist's son. This mark links the physical work to its corresponding record and offers collectors a documented point of reference as to authenticity.

Titles Faithful to the Artist

A title is assigned to a work only where documentary evidence exists: a note in the artist's hand, or a title already handed down. In the absence of such evidence, the work is recorded as «Untitled» — a mark of respect, so as not to attribute to Marchetti designations that are not his own.

An Open Catalogue

The catalogue makes no claim to be exhaustive: it records the work at a given moment and grows as further works are examined. Some works are known only through photographs supplied by their owners and are included with a note that transparently indicates their different degree of verification. Many others remain in private and family collections: for this reason the cataloguing programme stays open to the contribution of anyone who owns a work by the painter.

The aim is to make the images of all the painter's works progressively available online: an undertaking that will take time, but to which the archive devotes itself steadily. We also rely on the collaboration of the owners of the works: every image they choose to share helps to enrich and complete the documentation.

Curatorial Notes

Some artwork records are accompanied by a commentary. These are curatorial notes produced by the Archive, developed over the years from direct examination of the works and from knowledge of the artist's trajectory. Their function is descriptive and documentary, and they do not constitute independent criticism: the independent criticism presented on this site is historical, signed by its respective authors and reproduced with the relevant bibliographical reference. The distinction is set out on the Transparency page.
